A Study of the Grammar of Réunion Creole

This questionnaire was created and used by Delia Bentley and Alina McLellan (Department of Linguistics and English Language, The University of Manchester) in a study of the grammar of Reunion Creole conducted in 2024-2025. An output of this study, entitled ‘The existential-presentational conundrum: new evidence from Kréol Rényoné’, has been accepted for publication in Italian Journal of Linguistics (https://www.italian-journal-linguistics.com/). For a full appreciation of the questionnaire, reference to this publication is recommended.Ethical approval for the study was granted by the Proportionate UREC committee of the University of Manchester (Ref: 2024-21442-38361).The questionnaire consisted of 125 randomised entries, classifiable as (a) sentences in Reunion Creole, (b) photos (from Microsoft power point stock images or https://www.pexels.com) and (c) two short videos. The power point stock images and the videos have been replaced with short descriptions in the Figshare version.The questionnaire was administered to native speakers via Qualtrics (https://www.qualtrics.manchester.ac.uk/) during live interviews, which were held on Zoom and audio recorded as WAV files on a University of Manchester audio recorder. The participants were asked to describe the photos and the videos. As for the sentences, the participants were asked either to select one of a small number of options as a suitable context of occurrence for the sentence or to assess the acceptability of the sentence, choosing one the following judgments:(i) Lé bon – mi diré in nafer com sa ‘It’s good – I would say this’(ii) Mi noré pa di in fraz kom sa mwin, mé demoun la rényon noré di kom sa ‘I would not say this, but some people in La Réunion would.’(iii) Non lé pa bon - person noré di sa an kréol renyoné ‘It’s no good – no one would say this in Kréol RenyonéAll findings have been stored in accordance with the requirements of the UREC committee and the recommendations of the Data Management Plan for the study.
