In the early 1980s a total of 126 land and land use attributes were
quantitatively recorded from map and statistic sources for the 2858
10 x 10 km grid squares (cells) of the Ordnance Survey National Grid which
contained land in Great Britain.
The attributes are grouped into categories:
Physiography (eg. relative relief, altitude range);
Climate (eg. seasonal rainfall, temperature and wind speed);
Geology (eg. extent of stratigraphic units);
Soils (eg. extent dominated by 8 major soil groups); Topography (eg.
population, settlement frequency);
Land Use (eg. extent of farmland, woodland and urban land);
Agricultural Land Classification;
Conservation Status (eg. presence of National Parks).
The attributes provide the basis for a land data set appropriate to
national and regional scales of ecological assessment and resource
evaluation.
