VPRS 6101 Registers of Country Births

This series comprises registers of births recorded by the Deputy Registrars assigned to various districts throughout Victoria. Details are captured for each birth, including relevant dates, addresses, parents' names and other identifying details. Compulsory registration of births was first legislated by the Births, Deaths and Marriages Act (Act 16 Vic., No.26) in 1853. Responsibility for registration in regional areas was delegated to Deputy Registrars assigned to each district. In 1959, regional registration offices were abolished and the registration of births were centralised. The C1 consignment contains records received from the East Gippsland Historical Society Inc in January 2024.
