Human respiratory syncytial virus (hRSV) M2 gene contains two overlapping open reading frames. Ribosomes translate the second ORF to the M2-2 protein after departing from the first ORF. This coupled translation depends on a coding region in the mRNA containing a high degree of secondary structure, directing the ribosome back onto the start codon of the second ORF (Ahmadian et al, 2000; Gould & Easton, 2005; Gould & Easton, 2007)
