Microcystis aeruginosa NIES-88 has been shown to produce the cyclic undecapeptide kawaguchipeptin which is reported to inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus at low concentrations. The biosynthetic origin of kawaguchipeptins is currently unknown. Here we obtained a genome sequence for Microcystis aeruginosa NIES-88 and show that kawaguchipeptin is a member of the cyanobactin family of peptides.
