Research Background The curatorial basis for the exhibition as outlined by Katie Paine, c3 Gallery Manager, was that "The work of the exhibiting artists sits on the precipice of abstraction and figuration: for some, what ostensibly appears automatic, or abstract is embedded with concealed narrative, for others narrative seems inherent, but upon closer inspection, content is rendered absurd or nonsensical. Referencing what critic Claire Bishop refers to as 'the formation of elements capable of speaking twice: from their readability and from their unreadability' (1), this collection of works seems charming or inviting, but remain evasive- secretive even. 1. Bishop, C 2012, Artificial Hells: Participatory Art and the Politics of Spectatorship, Verso, London. Research Contribution In my piece the work used elements of historical languages, humour, advertising, references to sound and street art graffiti mark-making to conflate organised thought and linear theoretical histories into a seemingly non-sensical 3D wall piece that referenced both formal and outsider painting. Research Significance It is to be noted that c3 is an important ARI that has a curatorial vision which encompasses a wide range of art forms, including contemporary and experimental art, design, web based art, architecture, craft, fashion, community based projects and performance/sound works. c3 supports projects that demonstrate new and innovative approaches towards the production of art and ideas. As such my work in the exhibition contributed, both during the duration and in archival form, to the research aims and curatorial refinement inherent in c3 philosophy.
