Ornithobacterium hominis isolates from nasopharyngeal swabs of children with chronic suppurative lung disease

Ornithobacterium hominis is a bacterium observed in nasopharyngeal microbiota data from around that world that has not been cultured previously. An earlier PCR-based study (Salter et al. 2018) found O. hominis is prevalent and persistent in the nasopharynx of children in a population at high-risk of respiratory infection. Although O. hominis genomes can be derived from metagenomic data, isolates are needed to deepen understanding of the bacterium's clinical significance. The aim of this study was to determine optimal O. hominis culture conditions. The availability of an easily reproducible O. hominis culture method is expected to facilitate deeper understanding of this species
