Nicotiana benthamiana is a widely used model organism for plant-pathogen interactions as well as a a platform for rapid gene expression using transient expression. Multiple genes can be transiently expressed by co-infiltrating multiple Agrobacterium strains enabling the reconstruction of complex metabolic pathways. There is established interest for using N. benthamiana as a commercial-scale biotechnology platform for the production of proteins and small molecules.
