SCORE_Cancer Causes Control_O’Leary_2023_Mailed FIT Uptake in 45-49-Year-Olds

Scaling Colorectal Cancer Screening through Outreach, Referral, and Engagement (SCORE), part of Accelerating Colorectal Cancer Screening and Follow-up through Implementation Science (ACCSIS), is an NCI-funded project aimed at increasing colorectal cancer screening among average-risk patients aged 50-75 and served by two federally qualified health centers in North Carolina through centralized mailed fecal immunochemical testing (FIT) outreach and patient navigation to follow-up colonoscopy for those with an abnormal FIT. Mailed FIT outreach occurred from June 2020-September 2021 in waves, and patients with abnormal FITs were followed for nine months from the time of their abnormal FIT result. This dataset is for a sub-study of the larger SCORE trial focused on average-risk patients at a single federally qualified health center site in the age category of 45-49 years. Average-risk individuals in this age group are newly eligible for colorectal cancer screening per the 2021 U.S. Preventive Services Task Force screening recommendation. The dataset includes individual-level data on active, average-risk patients in this younger age group who were randomized to receive a SCORE mailed FIT intervention delivered in an enhanced mailing envelope versus a plain mailing envelope. Data include socio-demographic characteristics, type of envelope, mailed FIT return, and FIT results. In addition, this dataset includes individual-level data on all active patients at this site in the 45-49 age category including those who met eligibility criteria (e.g., average-risk) for the mailed FIT intervention and those who were ineligible because of risk factors (e.g., inflammatory bowel disease) that make colonoscopy the preferred initial screening test. Data include completion of any colorectal cancer screening modality (e.g., stool test, colonoscopy) and time since last screening. Data are available by request to the corresponding author.
