The Fire Product: Northern Territory of Australia Fire Mosaic was part
of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme Data and
Information System (IGBP-DIS) Regional Satellite Fire Data Compilation
CD-ROM.
The project to monitor the regional fire mosaic of the Northern
Territory, Australia, was initiated for the arid lands of the southern
Northern Territory in 1984, and the fire mosaic is updated annually.
The project was extended to include the tropical savannas of the
northern part of the Northern Territory (the Top End) in 1993. For the
Top End the aim was to develop a monitoring and reporting methodology
more suited for the dynamic nature of the tropical savanna
ecosystems. Initially the fire mosaic was updated monthly but the
frequency has been increased to the 9 or 18 day cycle of the NOAA
satellite. It provides a regional overview to meet the needs of the
Northern Territory Bushfire Council as the regulatory body responsible
for fire management.
The data set of the fire mosaic of the Northern Territory of Australia
was generated from NOAA AVHRR data. The images represents the area
burnt by fires during the period 1993 to 1996. The data is a
cumulative summary for each calendar year, not the full data set with
9 to 18 day updates.
