Langmuir Turbulence in the Arctic Ocean: Insights From a Coupled Sea Ice –Wave Model

The dataset consists of output from a coupled sea ice--wave modeling system integrating the neXt-generation Sea Ice Model (neXtSIM) with the spectral wave model WAVEWATCH~III (WW3) via the OASIS-MCT coupler. The simulations cover the pan-Arctic domain north of 54 degrees North for the period 2018--2022, with three-hourly temporal resolution. NeXtSIM provides prognostic sea ice concentration, thickness, and floe-size distribution, while WW3 simulates wave propagation and attenuation in ice-covered waters using an ice-aware wave attenuation scheme. Both model components are forced by hourly ERA5 atmospheric winds. NeXtSIM additionally uses oceanic forcing from the GLORYS12V1 reanalysis, while WW3 applies lateral wave boundary conditions from a global WW3 hindcast. The two models exchange fields every 30 minutes via interpolation between their respective grids. NeXtSIM operates on a moving triangular mesh with a nominal resolution equivalent to 25~km, while WW3 uses a fixed stereographic grid of comparable resolution.
