ATS-3 Satellite Pictures Provide Information for Issuance of Severe Thunderstorm Warning

A Technical Attachment to the Staff Notes of June 4, 1973, described the operational use now being made by the Eastern Region of ATS-3 satellite picture information being disseminated by the Satellite Field Servi ces Station (SFSS) collocated with WSFO Washington. It was reported that, "Recently, the SFSS has been able to almost daily provide our field stations with operationally important information concerning convective activity." Another outstanding example of this occurred on June 12, 1973. Information.concerning convective activity over New York State and northern New England was available from.satellite pictures and no other source at the time.
