Influence of hydrogen peroxide on the heterotrophic community in ammonia-oxidizing enrichment culture ACW2

The ammonia-oxidizing enrichment culture ACW2 was enriched from the water column of Lake Acton in Ohio on mineral salts medium with 2.5 mM ammonium. The culture contains the ammonia oxidizer Nitrosomonas sp. Is24 and a community of heterotrophic bacteria. In this study, we investigated the effect of 0.01 mM and 0.1 mM hydrogen peroxide on the activity of the ammonia oxidizer and the community structure of the heterotrophic bacteria over time. In addition, we determined the recovery of the community structure after removal of the hydrogen peroxide stress.
