Medication management and burden of type 2 diabetes in residential aged care

Type 2 diabetes is common in residential aged care, yet little is known about how well diabetes medications are managed in these settings. This research examined medication practices and health outcomes internationally and in Victoria, Australia. Key findings showed that many residents receive either too much or too little diabetes treatment, medication use often doesn't change appropriately when people move into care, and over half of residents are rehospitalised within two years, many for preventable causes. Frail residents face particularly poor outcomes. These findings highlight urgent needs for better medication reviews, clearer treatment guidelines, and targeted strategies to prevent unnecessary hospitalisations in aged care worldwide.
