EGY_CMMHH_June-2020_V5.0 Poll on The Effects of COVID-19 in Egypt, CMMHH- June-2020 COVID-19 MENA Monitor Household Survey (HH/CMMHH) The “Poll on The Effects of COVID-19 in Egypt” survey involves a cross-sectional dataset for individuals that includes some harmonized variables with COVID-19 MENA Monitor surveys. During one of most turbulent beginnings to a decade in recent history; we have observed the spread of a global pandemic with unprecedented socio-economic and financial consequences. To better understand the impact of the shock induced by the pandemic on Egypt and assess the policy responses in a rapidly changing context, reliable data is imperative, and the need to resort to a dynamic data collection tool at a time when countries in the region are in a state of flux cannot be overstated. To fill this knowledge gap, the ILO commissioned The Egyptian Center for Public Opinion Research (Baseera), to conduct a rapid labor force phone survey, in order to study the impact of COVID 19 on the Egyptian labor market. The survey of working age (15 to 64) individuals was conducted on 24th - 30th of June 2020, collecting a sample of 2,033 individuals. The ILO has then commissioned the ERF for the preparation of the harmonised data to be comparable with the COVID 19 Monitor data and is featured as the first wave for Household/Individual data for Egypt's COVID-19 Monitor; to be followed by 2 waves of data collected by Economic Research Forum (ERF) These surveys aim to monitor the effect of the crisis on Egyptian households, workers, business owners and farmers as well as assessing the way in which these players are coping with the pandemic effects and their expectations regarding future income and job stability. The “Poll on the effects of COVID-19 in Egypt” survey takes into consideration the key demographic and socio-economic characteristics of Egypt to understand the different distributional consequences of the impact of COVID-19 and responses to it, which allows to further study the effect of the pandemic on different vulnerable groups including informal and irregular workers, low skilled workers and youth. Sample survey data [ssd] Household and Individuals V5.0: Version 5 of the “Poll on the effects of COVID-19 in Egypt” survey prepared for public dissemination. 2021-11 The questionnaire covers the following: - Household characteristics - Labor market status - Employment characteristics - Income and earnings - Changes due to COVID-19 - Worker module: job formality, working hours, online work - Coping Strategies - Outlook National The survey covers a simple random sample of individuals from 18-64 completed years old. The sample universe for the survey were landline and mobile phone users aged 15-64. A nationally representative random digit dialing (RDD). In order to harmonize the Egyptian survey with the COVID-19 MENA Monitor surveys, individuals that don't own a mobile phone and are less than 18 years old were excluded from the data analysis (57 obs.), resulting in a sample size of 1923 observations. Essentially, inverse probability weighting was used to reduce bias within a number of observable dimensions. Weights are described separately for household samples and firms. Weights were created on three levels: Individual, household, and household member. Weights had the following inputs: · Telephone operators and their market shares, provided by the data collection firm · Number of phones by operator for individuals (individual weight) and household members (household weight and household member weight) · Representative data with comparable demographic and household characteristics to weight for non-response Household member weights were calculated by multiplying household weights by household size. Household and individual weights (but not member weights, for internal consistency) were all winsorized at the 99th percentile to ensure that no outlier weight drove statistics. Weights were then normalized by dividing by the mean weight. Individual weights should be used for all analyses where the outcome is at the individual level. If outcomes are at the household level (e.g. household income, household food security) then the weight will depend on whether you are generalizing to households (e.g. X% of households are food insecure) or household members (e.g. X% of individuals live in a food insecure household). ERF seeks IRB (Institutional Research Board) approval for all its data collection exercises to ensure the protection of the rights and welfare of human subjects participating in the research project. All interviews are conditioned upon receiving informed consent (which spells out the respondent's rights) from respondents. Data are collected through three bi-monthly waves of phone surveys covering at least 2033 individuals. Licensed datasets, accessible under conditions.
