The purpose of an admission register was to record basic details about children admitted to the school, and about their parents or guardians. The registers were also used to record the progress of the children through various classes and the date of their leaving the school.The series from Moonan Brook Public School is currently represented by a single volume, probably the second of an original two, which covers the period from 1878 until the final closure of the school in March, 1970. This volume was actually commenced in January, 1887, but includes retrospective entries of earlier enrolments still current at that time. It contains information pertaining to each pupil including: date of admission; pupil's name, age and religious denomination; date of leaving previous school and class in previous school. The following details are recorded about the child's parents or guardians: name, residence and occupation. The pupil's date of admission to each subsequent grade, date of leaving the school and the reason assigned for leaving are also recorded.Girls and boys are listed on opposite pages in order of admission, and numbered in sequence. Until the end of 1942, girls’ and boys’ entries are treated as two separate sequences. Thereafter, although still listed on opposite pages, boys’ and girls’ entries are numbered together as one sequence.The first nineteen boys’ entries and the first twenty-two girls’ entries in this volume, dating from before mid-January, 1887, have been transferred from the previous volume of the series, and retain the numbering used in that earlier volume. This numbering is continued in the present volume until July, 1888, at which time all current enrolments were re-entered, and the numbering of each sequence of entries was re-commenced from “1.” This was done again in August, 1891, but on no subsequent occasion, and the numbering which was commenced in that year continues until the year 1942. From 1943 onwards, the numbering of entries is commenced anew at the beginning of each school year, and to each entry number is suffixed the last two digits of the year number.
