Dermacentor variabilis, commonly known as the American dog tick or wood tick, transmits bacteria responsible for Rocky Mountain spotted fever and tularemia.The study is designed to analyze the mitochondrial genomes from single ticks and bacterial genome sequences of prevalent agents found in the ticks including their Francisella-like endosymbionts and different species of Rickettsia.The mitochondrial sequences can be used in taxonomic and population genetic studies and the bacterial sequences to understand their physiological interactions with the host ticks. The genome sequences are also useful in bacterial taxonomy and for designing molecular diagnostic and detection assays.
