Microbiome of Sri Lankan Mangrove Sediments

This project is carried out to understand the bacterial diversity in Sri Lankan mangrove sediments using culture-independent metagenomic analysis. Mangrove habitats in Sri Lanka are interspersed along the coastline, covering an approximate area of 12000 ha. As per our knowledge, the studies carried out to reveal the bacterial diversity of mangrove sediments in Sri Lanka are scarce. Being a tropical island with rich floral and faunal diversity, Sri Lanka provides an ideal reservoir for microbial diversity as well. Therefore, studying the diversity of microbial populations of mangrove sediments of Sri Lanka can uncover significant information on their community structure, phylogenetic composition, species and functional diversities.
