Altar dedicated to Lares Augusti

This slab is an altar front bearing a dedication to the Lares Augusti by four ministri of servile rank, appointed to the cult of the Lares (traditional deities worshiped at compita, crossroads and celebrated with festivals, Compitalia) re-established by Augustus. The inscription is framed by a wreath of oak leaves above, and by laurel branches to the sides with sacred fillets hanging from them. Around 7 BC, on the occasion of the city's administrative division into regiones and vici (regions and districts), the emperor Augustus (27 BC - AD 14) reorganised the cult of the Lares by introducing the cult of the Lares Augusti, also associated with the Genius Caesari (Genius of the Emperor).
