In contrast to just intonation, not all intervals can be reproduced with sufficient purity using equidistant subdivisions of the octave. Even in the 16th-note system (with 96 notes per octave) the natural seventh is clearly too large. The same applies to the xenharmonic subdivisions of the octave into 17, 19, 31, 43 or 53 tone steps proposed by Ivor Darreg.
