Nidderdale AONB Archaeological Survey Archiving Project

In 1999, Lancaster University Archaeological Unit were commissioned by North Yorkshire County Council, in conjunction with the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) Project, to undertake an archaeological survey of part of the Nidderdale AONB. The aim of this survey was to concord various datasets which had been produced by previous work; to verify and record existing features, and to identify any further features within the area. The overarching aim of the survey was to help inform management of the Historic Environment within the AONB. A rapid walk-over survey was undertaken across four sample areas, which were chosen to give coverage across the AONB in representative sections. Of the 603 square kilometres within the AONB, the sample areas covered an estimated third (c200km2). The results were processed using a digital database and GIS mapping of the survey results. The dataset comprises the report produced, as well as the Database and GIS files produced by the survey; and various associated digital Image files of photos and sketches.
