A hydrodynamic model is used to investigate the impact that climate change would have on extreme sea levels forced by storm surges. The simulated outputs of the model include storm surge and total water levels for three hazard scenarios: the 1:10 year, the 1:100 year and the 1:1000 year return periods. This dataset provides these modelled return period outputs for the entire coastline of China, Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand. It covers storm surge and total water levels for both past/present (1980-2018) and future scenarios (2015-2050; using SSP5-8.5 climate projections). The hydrodynamic model was able to generate new estimates of existing and future storm surge behaviour under a changing climate because of a new synthetic database representing 10,000 years of past/present and future tropical cyclone activity. It is important to estimate the risks posed by extreme sea levels, especially in tropical regions where cyclones can generate large storm surges and observations are too limited in time and space to deliver reliable analyses. That is why this dataset was produced by Principal Investigator Dr Ivan D Haigh and Dr Melissa Wood from the School of Ocean and Earth Science, National Oceanography Centre, University of Southampton, in collaboration with the Southern Institute of Water Resource Research (SIWRR), School of Geography and Environmental Science, University of Southampton, the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research at the University of East Anglia and the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) under NERC Grant CompFlood (grant number NE/S003150/1).
