The secretions of the male forest musk gland are androgenic pheromone products that act as chemical communication between individual musks. It is the musk gland that has the ability to synthesize musk. Here, we used musk gland tissue from two juvenile and three adult musk deer to analyze genomic evolutionary events, assess mRNA profiles, and study cellular composition. Single-cell sequencing of adult and juvenile musk glands was also performed.
