Primary production is a quantitative expression of vegetative matter (e.g. harvestable yield) which can be produced (e.g. in tons) by the natural environment at a location per unit area (e.g. per hectare) over a given period of time (e.g. in a season or a year). Primary production is useful in overall agricultural planning of a country or region, in objectively assessing the intrinsic environmental biomass production capability between one region and the next.
