THE DEVELOPMENT OF POSTMODERNISM IN ENGLISH LITERATURE

This article examines the development of postmodernism in English literature, focusing on its historical background, theoretical foundations, and major literary characteristics. Emerging in the second half of the twentieth century, postmodernism challenged the conventions of modernism by rejecting absolute truths, linear narratives, and fixed interpretations. The study explores essential features such as intertextuality, metafiction, fragmentation, irony, parody, and historiographic metafiction through the works of prominent English writers. Furthermore, it discusses the influence of postmodernism on contemporary English fiction and its contribution to the transformation of literary theory and narrative techniques. The article concludes that postmodernism has significantly reshaped English literature by encouraging experimental writing and active reader participation.
