The genus Dickeya constitutes an important group of plant pathogens. Most Dickeya isolates originated from infected crops or ornamental plants but they are also repeatedly isolated from water. In order to increase the knowledge on the natural diversity of Dickeya, a survey was performed in lakes protected from direct agricultural inputs in the French region, Les Dombes. Several Dickeya isolates were collected and analysed, disclosing an atypical group containing the strains S12, S15, S24, S29T and S39. Genomic data supported the delineation of a new species, for which the name Dickeya lacustris sp. nov. is proposed, with the type strain S29T.
