ThispublicationhasbeendevelopedwithinthecontextoftheresearchdevelopedbytheEuropeanprojectNANOYOU,fundedbytheEuropeanUnion’sseventhframeworkprogramme(FP7,grantagreementn°233433).Ithasbeenenrichedbytheauthorswithnumerousandmultifacetedinputs,reflectionsandinsightsonsocietalissues,alsoprovidedbytheEuropeanprojectTimeforNano.(FP7,grantagreementn°233481).Theoutcomesfromalltheseeffortshavebeenintegratedandeditedintoanoverallandfullyreferencedbook,showinghowtoaddressnanosciencesandnanotechnologiesconceptsandapplications.Ithasbeenspecificallydevelopedtopresentinasingle,balancedcompendium,muchoftherelevantandvaluableeducationalmaterialthatwillhelpinform,motivateandinspireyoungpeopleaboutnanotechnologiesandtheirapplications.Theory,applicationandexperimentsinnanosciencesandnanotechnologiesareorganisedinself-containedmodulesthatofferincreasedflexibilitythroughoutthedevelopmentofthecourse.Moreover,acasestudyapproachprovidesteacherswithpracticalapplicationsandexamplestodiscussinclass.Theprogrammefocusesonthreeapplicationfields—informationandcommunicationtechnologies,energyandenvironment,andmedicine—andalsoaddressestheassociatedethical,societal,legalandsafetyaspectstoencouragefurtherdialogue.Resourcesandtrainingmaterialsareavailabletoeducators,supported,also,byonlinetutorwebportalswhereyoungpeopleandeducatorscanactivelyparticipateinvirtualdialogues,experimentsandgames.Thelessons,discussionsonapplicationsandexperimentspresentedinthisbookhavebeentestedbyteachers,professorsandeducatorsfromaboutonethousandschools(50pilotschoolsand906ancillaryschools)in20Europeancountriesfrom2010to2011,reachingabout40.000students.Thisexperienceallowedforfeedbackandenrichedthisbookwithmanycommentsandcontributions,enablingtoproducethefinalandinclusiveversion.
