In the frame of this project, we plan to characterize the microbial community structure and function at a thermal pond (water temperature around the year ≈ 40 ˚C, up to 60 ˚C in the deeper sediment), rich in agricultural organic material, located in Central Greece. Focus will be given on microbes and microbial networks driving the degradation of plant biomass. Thus this project has two major aims: (1) to study the bacterial, fungal and archaeal network structures in both the aerobic and microaerobic microhabitats within the sediment and comparison with samples of a geologically similar low carbon site, (2) to link microbial community structure to functional traits related to carbon turnover and degradation.
