Data from: Estimating Potential Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Degraded Seagrass Meadows: A Case Study from Thailand's Seagrass Ecosystems

This dataset provides measurements of sediment carbon storage, ecosystem metabolism, and greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes from seagrass meadows and adjacent bare sand areas along the Andaman Sea coast of Thailand. Data were collected across three habitat categories: healthy seagrass, degraded seagrass, and bare sand. Sediment carbon stocks (top 10 cm) were quantified, Net Community Production (NCP) was assessed from incubation experiments, and fluxes of CO₂, CH₄, and N₂ were measured to evaluate carbon metabolism and GHG emissions. The dataset shows clear differences among habitat types: degraded meadows and bare sand exhibited heterotrophic functions, while healthy seagrass maintained autotrophic metabolism. Methane was the dominant GHG emitted across all habitats, with the highest emissions recorded in degraded meadows. Sediment carbon stocks also varied, with higher values in degraded meadows and bare sand compared to healthy meadows. These data provide baseline values for carbon storage and GHG emissions in tropical seagrass ecosystems under different degradation states. They can be used for comparative studies, synthesis across blue carbon habitats, and incorporation into climate mitigation and carbon accounting models.
