Several series are housed within the one volume. It would appear that this volume was used to record statistical details in the late 1930s (see below) and was recycled to record other series around 1953. (Bendigo ceased to be a prison in late 1939, when it came under the control of the Commonwealth Government to be used as a military stockade. It was reproclaimed a gaol in March 1952.)Each of the series recorded in this volume will be described in turn:Statistical Reports (1937-1939)This series consists of a number of statistical tables presenting various data on prisoners. It would seem that all Victorian gaols were required to compile such statistics for the Penal and Gaols Branch, so that summary statistical reports for each year could be prepared for the Inspector-Generals annual report. Statistical tables include: Number of prisoners received and discharged, Value of male/female prison labour, Return of birthplaces and religions.Personal Details of Staff (c1953-c1957)This series consists of the names and addresses of staff working at the prison. Also included is a memo addressed to the Penal Department from 1957 which records the name, address, phone numbers and positions of prison staff.Staff Leave Records (1953-1957)Two series within this volume record details of the various leave entitlements of prison staff (such as annual leave, sick leave, weekend, holiday leave).The first series is headed Record of annual leave, leave in lieu of holidays and sick leave granted to officers. The names of the officers are recorded along with the number of days granted for leave and the dates the leave was to be taken.The other series in this volume is recorded in the pages following the Admissions Register (see below) and is a Record of Officers Weekend and Holiday Leave. The names of officers employed at Bendigo are listed across the top of the page. For each name there are 3 columns: Sat, Sun, Hol. The dates on which leave was taken by each officer are recorded in these columns as applicable.Admissions Register (1953)This series records the reception of prisoners between June and December 1953. In the register, personal details of each prisoner received were entered: the prisoners name, offence, sentence, occupation, religion and date of birth. Also entered was the date the prisoner was admitted, from where and how the prisoner was disposed (ie, discharged, transferred, freedom, etc). The prisoners Register Number (the number assigned to all prisoners by the Penal & Gaols Branch) is recorded, as well as another Local Number (T1, T2, etc), presumably another numbering system used by this particular prison.Staff Duty Roster (1953-1958)This series records the duties of officers employed at the prison and the locations where officers would be working during their shifts. Pasted into the volume amongst the records in this series there are several memos from the Penal & Gaols Department, relating to procedures for matters such as annual leave, overtime, etc.
