In this proposal, we want study the plasma-material interaction in the context of lightning strike impacting aeronautical fasteners. Hence, we propose to investigate the behaviour of fasteners subject to kilo amperes current at sub-microsecond time scale by using high-speed x-ray phase-contrast imaging from ID19. We want to understand the basic physics of sparking phenomenon and how it damages the fastener. The results will serve to improve physical and mechanical models to explore new designs of lightning protections.
