Transcriptions of the primary sources on life and work of Michel Sittow

Dataset Description for the publication: https://www.brepols.net/products/IS-9782503611785-1 The dataset consists of a collection of scholarly transcriptions of primary source materials relating to the life and work of the painter Michel Sittow (c. 1469–1525). The sources originate from several European archival and manuscript repositories and constitute part of the documentary basis for the research presented in the monograph Painter to the Queen. The dataset includes materials preserved primarily in the Archivo General de Simancas (AGS)-particularly in the series Casa y Sitios Reales / Casa y Reales Sitios, Contaduría Mayor de Cuentas (1ª época), and Patronato Real, as well as documents from Archivo Histórico del Protocolo de Zaragoza (AHPZ), Archives départementales du Nord in Lille (ADN), and additional manuscript and archival collections including Rigsarkivet (Copenhagen), Bibliothèque nationale de France (BNF), and Biblioteca del Museo del Prado (Madrid). The sources are written in several languages used in late medieval and early modern administrative and cultural contexts, including Castilian Spanish, French, and Danish. The dataset provides transcriptions of these documents rendered in modern typographic conventions to facilitate readability and digital use, while preserving the original spelling, linguistic forms, and structural features of the texts as closely as possible. These documents include royal payroll records, treasury accounts, payment orders, letters, inventories of artworks, and notarial documents referring to Michel Sittow and his professional activity at the courts of Isabella I of Castile, Margaret of Austria, and Christian II of Denmark. The dataset has been assembled and documented as part of the project funded through 2022/47/D/HS2/01798, supported by NCN, Poland (Narodowe Centrum Nauki). Documentary Context and References The dataset includes references identifying the archival location of each document, including collection names, shelfmarks, and folio numbers. Bibliographic References Each document entry includes references to the relevant scholarly literature where the document has been previously cited or discussed, enabling verification and further research. All data was collected and prepared in accordance with the ethical and legal guidelines of the funding body and the archival institutions involved.
