PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of processing biomass to obtain useful products such as hydroxyl-carboxylic acids. SOLUTION: A method includes treating a reduced recalcitrance biomass (e.g.， lignocellulosic or cellulosic material) with one or more enzymes and/or organisms to produce a hydroxy-carboxylic acid (e.g.， an alpha， beta， gamma or delta hydroxy-carboxylic acid)， and converting the hydroxy-carboxylic acid into a product.
