SIRT1 and Antioxidants in infertile Females: Exploration of the Role of Vitamin D

Deficiency of Silent Information Regulator1 (SIRT1) can trigger inflammation, mitochondrial malfunctioning, and apoptosis through the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis, producing poor quality oocytes, triggering obesity and associated metabolic disorders. Normal Vitamin D levels promote SIRT1 activity required for optimal fertility, and low levels of either may result in fertility problems owing to cell-membrane de-stabilization, increased autophagy, DNA damage leading to increased reactive oxygen species and mitochondrial dysfunction.
