Nurses and midwives, despite comprising the majority of the global healthcare workforce, are significantly underrepresented in healthcare leadership roles. Gender and professional barriers hinder the path to leadership of women nurses. The World Health Organization has identified nursing leadership development as a global priority to improve population health outcomes. This thesis focus on problem, solution and change in nursing as a foundation for a nationwide project dedicated to promoting women nurses and midwives into healthcare leadership. Further this thesis explore the structural and organisational barriers, facilitators, and strategies for advancing gender equality in nursing and midwifery in healthcare leadership.
