Analysis of microbial communities associated with Dermanyssus gallinae based on culture-dependent method and 16S rDNA amplicon sequencing

The poultry red mite (PRM), also known as Dermanyssus gallinae, is one of the most detrimental ectoparasites in the world, causing remarkable economic losses in the poultry industry, which may be influenced by microbes as other arthropod pests. However, the community structure and physiological function of microbes in D. gallinae are still largely unknown. Here, the conventional culture method and high-throughput sequencing of 16S rDNA amplicons were combined for the first time to identify and compare the profile of bacterial communities at various developmental stages of D. gallinae.
