Data from: How social norms are integrated in natural resource co-management

This dataset compiles a structured coding of 46 empirical studies included
in a systematic scoping review on social norms and rule compliance in
natural resource co-management. The dataset is organized at the study
level and includes variables capturing: (i) bibliographic information;
(ii) study context (geographic region, resource system, governance
arrangement); (iii) conceptualization of social norms (explicit
definitions, theoretical framing); (iv) operationalization of norms (types
of indicators used, including descriptive norms, injunctive norms,
personal norms, sanctions, legitimacy, and related constructs); and (v)
reported links between normative mechanisms and compliance outcomes. Data
values consist of categorical codes, binary indicators (presence/absence),
short textual excerpts, and analytical notes documenting how each study
defined and measured social norms and related behavioral mechanisms. The
dataset enables comparative analysis of conceptual clarity, measurement
practices, and theoretical alignment across disciplines and empirical
contexts. The dataset can be reused for meta-analyses, theory-building on
social norms and compliance, methodological reviews of norm
operationalization, and the development of standardized coding frameworks
for social-ecological research.
