Endotracheal tube biofilms and their antimicrobial susceptibility in ICU. Bogota, Colombia.

Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), are one of the most important problems related to the use of medical devices in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Most of these infections are caused by pathogens resistant to antibiotics. In this study, we analyzed the microbial communities in 115 endotracheal tubes (ETTs) obtained from patients in two clinics. We found that the ICU where the patient was hospitalized, rather than intubation time or prognosis, determined microbial ETT composition.
