Ten samples were collected stratigraphically from four different strata at Site 002-160, Area
2, Ordnance Annex in Guam. Pollen analysis was undertaken to identify pre-Contact vegetation
associated with this area. Site 02-1660 is located on a wide, grassy terrace in an abrupt interface
between a karstic landform under limestone forest and sloping savannah. Savannah in this area
is dissected by deep ravines that support forests. In addition, a sink filled with water approximately
15 m west of the site supports a reed marsh. Assuming this sink was present at the time of
habitation, it probably provided a ready source of fresh water for the occupants of this site. This
site consists of an incomplete latte set (Feature A) and a mortar or lusong (Feature C), both
situated in grass on the terrace; and a rockshelter (Feature B), located nearby, within a karst
outcrop. The pollen column was collected from outside the rockshelter under a small exterior
overhang that produced abundant cultural materials.
