Natural resource management and traditional ecological knowledge of aborigine Paiwan恆春半島排灣族原住民傳統知識及自然資源使用方式

Aborigine Paiwan of southern Taiwan have been survived long with the natural environment surrounding them, and accumulated a lot of traditional ecological knowledge through natural resource management. However, the valuable knowledge lost soon, and now only be conserved in few old men and women. The purpose of this study are to investigate how aborigine Paiwan managed the natural resource, and discuss if their traditional ecological knowledge could be used well for natural resource management and conservation now. We completed the map of Kuskus traditional area, and 150 traditional site names concerning the agricultural land, hunting area, residential sites, sacred areas, and so on were recorded. Basing on the interviewing and site visiting with the old men of Kuskus, some of the traditional ways of natural resource management were also recorded. The ecological meanings of traditional natural resource management by Kuskus people will be discussed in this research program.
