Innovative product development, process protocol, and market strategies to achieve maximum use of the Atlantic herring

When you live in a seaport most of your life that has a heritage that must be preserved and is confronted with the possibility of degradation, quite often the community encounters mild depression in many sectors. During the past twenty years, the people in the fishing community of Gloucester have seen gradual erosion of its place of prominence. At some point someone had to reverse the flow of negativism by initiating a positive plan to explore new avenues. The Gloucester Fishermen's Wives made such a move upon acceptance of their application of the Grant. For years the commercial fishing interests pursued traditional fisheries which eventually led to over-fishing. Our Association felt that herring processed in other forms had great potential both to ethnic and non-ethnic groups.
