Where Went UK Churches: A Dataset of over 30,000+ Converted UK Churches and Their Post-Conversion Classification.

Where Went UK Churches is a data-driven research inquisition into the history of sold/converted UK churches and their aftermath conversion type. Over 32,451 former churches details across England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales sold, converted or repurposed over a period of five decades were collated and analysed using records from the companies house, the National Heritage List for England (NHLE), Historic Environment Scotland (HES), Historic Environment (CADW) Wales, Historic Environment Northern Ireland (HENI), Wikidata and OpenStreetMap. Results show conversion of churches to residential buildings only, slightly outnumber all conversion to other religious purpose by the ratio 1.5:1 ( 9,860 vs 4,721), thus clearly indicating the growing housing need of an expanding UK population which has seen 22% net population increase (+12.6 million people) since 1990.
