'From the Masthead to the Map' - data repository

This data repository houses the primary field data collected by Greer Jarrett during his doctoral research, 2020-2025. The datasets relate to the sailing trials and trial voyages conducted onboard Nordic clinker boats in various waters around Scandinavia, and form the foundation for several of his publications (see below).

This repository houses six datasets: 

1) "Jarrett_tracks_log_v3.zip": the GPS tracks and log from the sailing trials and trial voyages. The GPS tracks are stored in 'Jarrett_GPS_tracks_all_sails.shp' (and accompanying files with the same name), while the log is stored as both a shapefile ('Jarrett_sailing_log.shp' and accompanying files of the same name) and as a spreadsheet ('Jarrett_sailing_log.dbf'). Please see 'Jarrett_field_data_metadata.txt' for more information on the shapefiles and spreadsheets.

2) "Jarrett_sails001-024_info.zip": Accompanying each sailing trial or trial voyage is a Word document describing the context, aims, and results of each experiment. Please see sails001-026_readme.txt. for more information on the accompanying Word (.docx) documents.

3) "Jarrett_2025_RSL_shp.zip": the contour shapefiles indicating the Relative sea level (RSL) at five century marks: 800, 900, 1000, 1100, and 1200 AD. Please see 'RSL_shp_metadata.txt' for more information on these shapefiles and the dataset from which they were derived.

4) "Jarrett_2025_photography.zip": a selection of photographs and video footage from the sailing trials and trial voyages. Note that the timestamps associated with these files may be incorrect, as they were taken across multiple time zones. For more information, please contact the author. GDPR forms were signed by all persons depicted therein. 

5) "Jarrett_3D_models.zip": contains four scaled, photogrammetric models of the boats used during the sailing trials and trial voyages. Note that these are models of the boat hulls, for which the mast, rigging, sails, oars, deck planks, and in some cases rudders were removed prior to acquisition. For more information, please see 'jarrett_2025_3d_models_metadata.txt' contained in the folder. Due to size constraints, the RAW images for these 4 models are stored in separate data repositories, published under the same license here:

6) "boat_atts_trial_voyages.csv": measurements and performance data of the three vessels used in the project's trial voyages.
