To search for the gene which causes seed shattering in buckwheat, we needed two closely related buckwheat species with contrasting state of the trait. Fagopyrum esculentum Dasha is a common domesticated variety (non-shattering), Fagopyrum esculentum ssp. ancestrale is a wild ancestor of common buckwheat (shattering). F2 generation of their cross was obtained, the descendants were sequenced individually with low coverage and then concatenated into pools - shattering or non-shattering, correspondingly. 206 individuals form the non-shattering pool, 287 individuals form the shattering pool.
