Dam break scenarios for Turano and Salto dams, Italy (2024-03-13)

The Turano and Salto dams were completed in the 1938 and 1940, respectively, in the Lazio region, Italy. Potential hazardous events such as extreme rainfall, earthquakes or landslides could stress the dam structure, or induce secondary hazards. A dam break of one of the two dam would have severe consequences on the population located downstream, as well as on the buildings, infrastructure, such as railways, roads and industrial facilities located in the flood prone areas. The aim of this activation to support the Italian National Civil Protection Department of the Lazio region, where a major part of the AOI is located, by modelling dam break scenarios to understand the flood impacts and to highlight flood-prone areas, which could help the development of mitigation measures and preparedness plans.
