Update: Press materials from the European Commission (DG Trade) between 1989-2025 – Open Access

UPDATE: The data corpus (Nvivo) comprises all press materials published in the European Commission’s Press Corner –– filtered by press releases from the Directorate-General for Trade (DG Trade) spanning the period 1989 to February 10, 2025. The Nvivo corpus consists of 1868 documents, scraped from: https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/home/en.

More specifically, the Nvivo corpus consists of speeches and press releases from EU Trade Commissioners Frans Andriessen (1989-1992), Leon Brittan (1993-1999), Pascal Lamy (1999-2004), Peter Mandelson (2004-2008), Karel De Gucht (2010-2014), Cecilia Malmström (2014-2019), Phil Hogan (2019-2020), Valois Dombrovskis (2020-2024), and Maroš Šefčovič (2024-10th February 2025).

Speeches and press data from Danuta Hübner (2004), Catherine Ashton (2008-2009), and Benita Ferrero-Waldner (2009-2010) are excluded due to their relatively brief tenures as EU Trade Commissioners.

Most documents are provided in PDF format to ensure efficient coding in Nvivo. The dataset is openly accessible to support researchers exploring EU trade politics, policy, and institutional dynamics. Users should cite the source when using the dataset but are otherwise free to code and use the data as they see fit.
