To assess the diversity and relative abundance of bacteria and archaea in the samples, 16S rRNA genes (the V3-V4 region of bacteria and the V4-V5 region of archaea) were barcoded, amplified, and sequenced. The bacterial primers used for amplification were 338F (ACTCCTACGGGAGGCAGCAG) and 806R (GGACTACHVGGGTWTCTAAT), and the archaeal primers were Arch524F (TGYCAGCCGCCGCGGTAA) and Arch958R (YCCGGCGTTGAVTCCAATT).
