Forest ecosystem services and governance mechanisms

The data describes how 11 national forest policy documents in the EU discuss 6 different governance mechanisms related to forests. The governance mechanisms on the map are: markets, incentives by government, disruption, regulation ((other) laws, statutes), collaborative (networks, cooperatives) and information (guidelines, information technology and platforms, extension and advice).

Spatial dataset has been created by joining the institutional data of each country as attributes to its administrative boundaries in a GIS-software (ArcGIS). These attributes are: CNTR_ID; Country; Forest ecosystem service type; Weight or importance given to the ecosystem service in the document; Weight in EU-level. The administrative boundaries of the countries are provided by Eurostat (© EuroGeographics).”

Processing

The data has been gathered by European researchers analysing 11 different national forest policy documents and feeding their findings into a database survey which constructed the excel format dataset used for the maps. The governance mechanisms related to the forest ecosystem services (FES) have been graded as no mentions of governance mechanisms (0) to high numbers of mentions of governance mechanisms in question in the policy document. Spatial dataset has been created by joining the institutional data of each country as attributes to its administrative borders in a GIS-software (ArcGIS). These attributes are: CNTR_ID; Country; Governance mechanisms; Mentions of governance mechanisms; Mentions of governance mechanisms in EU-level.
