In this work, we wish to explore the self-assembly of graphene oxide nanosheets and various polymeric compounds in water. We will perform small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements to determine the internal structure of such assemblies, and from these data infer the predominating interactions that enable effective composite formation between GO and polymers of specific chemistries. We hope to build upon preliminary results concerning such systems in water, thus aiding in unravelling the relationships between GO and polymer chemistry, system conditions and colloidal forces. This will enable the informed design of new, noncovalent composite materials that will likely possess enhanced rheological properties and/or liquid crystalline properties.
