Due to increase global production and indiscriminate disposal of plastics, microplastics (MPs) have become ubiquitous and a threat to aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Furthermore, humans have been exposed to MPs mostly via consumption of sea food as dietary protein and drinking water with health implication largely unknown. There is limited literature on the effects of MPs globally, this necessitate the need to explore their effect using animal model in order to identify biomarkers and risk of exposure in humans and aquatic organisms. This will lead to the provision of guidelines and policies on production and management of plastics wastes and bio-monitoring population at risk .
